10 security tips to reduce retail
loss from theft
(NC)-For many retailers in Canada, a bleak economic outlook isn't
the only thing threatening their bottom line. Retail crime, from
theft to credit card fraud, remains a costly and pervasive industry
problem, and losses can be especially damaging in tough times when
business is slow and sales are down.
"Unfortunately, many retailers feel helpless to prevent incidents
of theft and fraud, and some even accept losses as a cost of doing
business," says Stephen Aikman, national manager, Retail Clients
at RBC. "Often a simple security assessment can identify areas
of vulnerability, and with a few changes and extra vigilance, retailers
can make strides in countering this type of crime."
Much of loss prevention revolves around theft deterrence and premises
security. Aikman offers the following tips to help retailers protect
their establishments and their employees:
1. Look for ways to improve visibility to all areas and keep stores
well lit, particularly around selling points.
2. Where possible, keep expensive and easily portable goods locked
in cabinets located close to staff working areas.
3. Consider installing surveillance devices such as observation
mirrors and closed circuit television.
4. Provide strong and consistent supervision of all staff. Deal
with issues of concern, such as shortfalls in daily takings or inventory,
immediately.
5. Maintain strict control of store keys and codes at all times
to ensure internal security.
6. Be mindful that shopping trolleys, boxes and bags can be used
by shoplifters to conceal the goods they are attempting to steal.
7. Watch for customers who continually return to the same register
or the same staff member, or who appear to be observing your business
too closely.
8. Make use of signage both inside and outside your business promoting
such security measures as video surveillance and minimum cash held
on premises.
9. Provide ongoing retail security training to all staff.
10. Conduct a complete in-store security audit to assess specific
security needs and identify weaknesses.
